"Can Violent Conflict be Prevented through Development Assistance?"

Peter Wallensteen
Peter Wallensteen, Ph.D., is the Dag Hammarskjold Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University in Sweden. A well-known scholar in peace research, Wallensteen served from 1972-1999 as Head of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, developing it into a major center of teaching and research in the field. His research has included causes of war, economic sanctions, military conversion, and development-conflict connections. Wallensteen directs the Uppsala Conflict Data Project, which presents annual data on conflicts around the globe. In recent years, he has focused on conflict resolution, publishing a book in Swedish and finalizing one this year in English on the peace agreements of the 1990s. In his lecture, Wallensteen will report on a recent study made for the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC). Wallensteen is a Visiting Fellow at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame during spring term 2001 through an award from the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF), which named him the first ASF Visiting Lecturer from Sweden.
