Former ambassador Jan Eliasson of Sweden will discuss the effect of armed conflict on civilians, including refugees and internally-displaced persons, as well as ways to protect civilians.

Eliasson’s distinguished diplomatic career began with posts at Swedish embassies around the world. He later served as the Diplomatic Adviser to the Swedish Prime Minister and as Director General for Political Affairs in the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In 1992, Eliasson was appointed the first United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and was involved in operations in Somalia, Sudan, Mozambique and the Balkans. He also took initiatives on landmines, conflict prevention and humanitarian action. Eliasson was part of the UN mediation missions in the war between Iran and Iraq from 1988-1992 and served as Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Darfur from 2006-2008.
