International Women's Day Celebrations
International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated globally every March 8. It was honored the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19, 1911. Since then, it has expanded across the globe to recognize and celebrate women's achievements in ending discrimination and gaining equality. The United Nations commemorates the day, and many countries have made it a national holiday.
Each year since 2004 the IPJ has held an event to commemorate IWD and report back from the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women. Recognizing and updating the community on the progress of women is a San Diego tradition started by the Women’s Equity Council of the United Nations Association nearly 30 years ago.

Accenting this year's U.N. theme of reaching out to rural women and the IPJ's focus on women and media, filmmaker Maria Luisa Gambale will show a portion of the 2011 award-winning documentary Sarabah and discuss the positive role media and entertainment can play in advancing gender justice. Sarabah is the story of singer, rapper and activist Sister Fa, “a hero to young women in Senegal and an unstoppable force for social change.”
