55th Annual DPI/NGO Conference 2002
United Nations Program Participation
At its regular session, July 2004, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) granted Special Consultation status to the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. The IPJ had begun seeking this affiliation, and preparing the needed documentation in May 2003, the earliest date it was eligible. The status enables the IPJ to designate representation to the United Nations, to the UN Headquarters in New York and the UN offices in Geneva and Vienna. Regular participation in programs and initial response to issues of concern are expected.
Prior to receiving official status, Deputy Director Dee Aker introduced the IPJ’s mission and work to the international community of NGOs active in ECOSOC through her participation in the various UN conferences and sessions. Aker has been an active participant in these UN programs since the 1995 Fourth UN World Conference on Women held in Beijing. Listed below are the UN Department of Pubic Information and NGO (DPI/NGO) annual conferences that bring the work of the UN and NGOs into focus in areas of joint cooperation and development; the annual UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) programs for national delegates and NGO representatives; and three major UN international conferences—on women, children and intolerance and discrimination—in which Aker participated in and shared information on the IPJ's activities.
