Migration and Immigration Policy

TBI’s location along the U.S.-Mexico border makes Mexican migration and U.S. immigration policy impossible to ignore. TBI is actively involved in these issues through its work with human rights groups working to address migrant rights, and through its ongoing research and programming.

Past Events

In October 2006, TBI organized a major international conference on “Trans-Border Migration and Development,” with former Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations, Jorge Castañeda, and North American integration expert Robert Pastor, with the goal of steering the immigration debate away from U.S. border protection and enforcement questions to address the underlying cause of Mexican migration: the economic disparity between the United States and Mexico. In April 2009, TBI organized the conference on “Religion, Migration, and National Identity” to examine how immigrants’ religious background and experience informs their integration into receiving countries and communities, including the role that religious groups of all denominations have played in championing migrant rights and comprehensive immigration reform. Over the last two years, TBI has also hosted a series of dialogues between the ACLU, the Human Rights Commission of the Mexican federal government, and other immigrant advocacy organizations, in an effort to promote better monitoring of migrant abuses along the U.S.-Mexican border.
