Cross-Border Media Roundtable: Reporting on the U.S.-Mexican Border

With no end in sight to the region's drug violence, continued national pressure for a U.S. immigration accord, and the pending Baja California gubernatorial elections, the coming year promises to keep the border in the headlines. The purpose of this roundtable was to discuss the challenges and nuances associated with reporting along the US-Mexico border, and to discuss the news prospects for the year ahead.

Reading and Book Signing by Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique's Journey

All USD Faculty Staff and Students were encouraged to organize reading discussion groups on the Pulitzer Prize winning book: Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario. With the outstanding photographic contributions of Don Barletti, Enrique's Journey is a moving story about immigration, family and love that resonates directly with issues in our community.

The Ethnic Studies Program at the University of San Diego joined forces with San Diego Public Library and KPBS Public Broadcasting to offer USD Faculty, Staff and Students the opportunity to actively engage in the One-Book-One-San Diego book discussion groups being organized on the USD campus for the entire month of February and early March. This event culminated with a reading and book signing by Ms. Nazario on March 9th in UC Forum A and B @ 6:30PM.

This project received the full support of Copley Library, Trans-Border Institute, the Office of Student Affairs, Office of Community Service Learning, Liberal Arts Beyond the Curriculum, and is part of the Campaign for Love and Forgiveness.

The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) and the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at UCSD hosted Gov. Juan Manuel Oliva of Guanajuato to discuss migration, economic development, and bilateral relations at a roundtable moderated by Dr. David A. Shirk, TBI director.

Gov. Oliva, who chairs the Migratory Affairs committee of the National Governors Conference (Conago), was joined by Sec. Juan Carlos López Rodríguez of the state Social and Human Development Secretariat.

Gov. Oliva’s appearance continued a conversation on sending-country economic development and its influence on current migration trends that emerged out of last October’s Bank of America sponsored "Trans-Border Migration and Economic Development Conference," hosted at the University of San Diego.

The Basement Society (Student Art Organization), the Trans-Border Institute and the Art Department invited the USD campus to hear Marcos Ramirez "Erre", a world known contemporary artist, talk about his work.. After the talk attendees stayed and enjoyed food and drinks with the artist and asked him questions.

ERRE talked about his personal life and experiences that brought him to undertake this moral responsibility of creating awareness through his installation work not only in Mexico and the US, but all over the world.

Marcos Ramirez "ERRE" is a local artist that has grown to be internationally renowned for his installation work. His art works revolve around a political and social consciousness, concentrating in the cross-border interaction. ERRE explores in his work the physical, economic, linguistic, and cultural limitations that divide people.

Undergraduates in Theatre Arts performed MUERTOS: A Day of the Dead Play, written and directed by Evelyn Díaz Cruz, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts. Global in its perspective and local in its lived experience, MUERTOS conjured images of death with pageantry, whimsy and contemplation.

Through the journey of Carmen, a photography student, audiences transcended images of crossing the Great Divide. A celebration of life as we know it in the San Diego/Tijuana region. Resplendent in visual imagery, live music, song and dance MUERTOS will stir your spirits.

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Shiley Theatre in Camino Hall
TICKETS: $11, general admission; $8, students, seniors
