3rd Annual Binational Borders Studies Conference

Since the implementation of NAFTA in 1994, processes of regional integration have had as their basis the border division system and related politics of divide and rule: a low-road, low wage export-oriented industrialization maquiladora strategy and policies of criminalization, deportation and incarceration. Current struggles on both sides of the border seek to articulate alternative forms of transnational and regional cooperation that move beyond the politics of divide and rule, by building communities of struggle and resistance that articulate a different and better future for the peoples of U.S. and Mexico. These struggles range from efforts to preserve existing communities, to resistance against the criminalization of immigration and larger community of color, related processes of detention and deportation, as well as struggles for public education, a new politics of solidarity. This conference will focus on the divide and rule strategies of the powers that be, and community struggles for alternative futures, based on people’s solidarity.
