State Legislators and U.S. Congresswoman Commemorate 10 Years of Women PeaceMakers

 

U.S. Congresswoman Susan Davis of California and State Legislators Mark Wyland, Joel Anderson, Christine Kehoe, Juan Vargas and Toni Atkins recognized the Women PeaceMakers Program during its 10th anniversary in September 2012. Congresswoman Davis read a statement on September 11, while the California state legislators submitted Joint Member Resolution No. 546 on September 28, congratulating the University of San Diego on the success of the program.

A Book Tribute to the Women PeaceMakers Program

In 2012, the Fred J. Hansen Foundation commissioned a book to recognize the 35 women who participated in the Women PeaceMakers Program in its first nine years. Written by IPJ Editors Kaitlin Barker Davis and Emiko Noma, the book —

35 Women Building Peace: Essential voices of justice and hope — was published by Easton Studio Press and is available through Amazon.com.

PeaceMakers Recognized Internationally

 

Recently, several Women PeaceMakers have been recognized internationally.

 

Vaiba Kebeh Flomo of Liberia was one of the first 12 students in the Women’s Peacebuilding Leadership Program at Eastern Mennonite University’s Summer Peacebuilding Institute.

 

Zandile Nhlengetwa of South Africa is the 2012 Human Rights Fellow at the Oak Institute for International Human Rights, based at Colby College.

 

And Radha Paudel, 2012 peacemaker from Nepal, was recognized as a Role Model for Peace, one of the N-Peace Awards given by the network of the same name.

 

In early 2013, Manjula Pradeep's organization, Navsarjan Trust, won The Times of India's Social Impact Award.

Christiana Thorpe Part of NDI Delegation to Kenya

 

Woman PeaceMaker Christiana Thorpe, chief of the National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, participated in a pre-election assessment mission to Kenya. The delegation was part of the National Democratic Institute's efforts to prevent violence in the next elections. Also part of the delegation was IPJ Distinguished Lecture Series speaker Ketumile Masire, the former president of Botswana.

Wahu Kaara

Wahu Kaara Named A "Fearless Woman" by Newsweek

 

Kenyan Woman PeaceMaker Wahu Kaara was recently named one of Newsweek/The Daily Beast's 150 Fearless Women from around the world, joining luminaries such as Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and the three 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winners. Kaara was a peacemaker at the IPJ in 2011, and her narrative, "The Strength of Mothers," was recently published.

 

 

 

 

 

Rubina Bhatti

Rubina Feroze Bhatti Given Human Rights Award in Pakistan

 

2009 Woman PeaceMaker Rubina Feroze Bhatti is one of four recipients of this year's award from the Human Rights Society of Pakistan. The selection of awardees was made for the role they played for the rights of the people in their respective fields and the struggle and sacrifices they made for the cause.

 

Bhatti was also a recent recipient of the National Women’s Political Caucus 2011 Women of Courage Award. The Women of Courage Awards are presented to women from diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated courage by taking a stand to further civil rights and equality, and who exemplify women's leadership.
