Dear Campus Community,

The tragic events of 9/11 are burned in our individual and collective memories, challenging long-standing assumptions about our security and vulnerabilities, our national values and identity, our individual priorities and responsibilities, and the character of our friends, our adversaries, and the changing international order (or disorder). These reflections should continue today and tomorrow, as the questions remain on the table and the answers have been sparse, contentious, and inadequate.

As an academic community, based on shared values and aspirations, we in the USD family have a particular obligation not only to sustain our memories of those who died and those who survived, but also to pursue our search for better policies, practices, norms, and institutions to discourage such acts of mass terror in the future, wherever they might occur and whomever might be the targets. So please join us both for this solemn commemoration and for this ongoing cross-campus dialogue.

We invite the university and San Diego communities to commemorate the tragic events of 9/11.
