From Congo and Iraq to San Diego: Involving Women and Men in Stopping Violence against Women

A panel of practitioners in the field of sexual and gender-based violence will speak about elevated levels of sexual and gender-based violence in conflict zones and refugee communities, and about efforts at prevention.

PANELISTS:

  • Jennifer Freeman has worked with various nongovernmental organizations in Ghana and in Ugandan refugee settlements on issues of women’s rights and peace-building.
  • Dilkhwaz Ahmed is executive director of License to Freedom, a non-profit advocacy group for refugee and immigrant women, mostly among Iraqi communities in San Diego County.
  • Baguira Girukwayo is a Congolese national who worked for the International Medical Corps as the community workers’ supervisor for the programs on violence against women and on HIV/AIDS; he is a supporter of women’s rights and equality in East African society.
