Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of ECOSOC, dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women. Every year, representatives of Member States gather at U.N. Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies.

Parallel events are organized outside the formal program of the commission; the IPJ has presented at many of these parallel sessions. The IPJ's presentations and other modes of participation are listed below.

 

Breaking Barriers

57th Session - March 4-16, 2013

 

March 5: "Breaking Barriers for Women: Recommendations on Security, Justice and Peace"

 

This panel highlighted the recommendations and launched the final report fromm the international conference “Breaking Barriers,” held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Women PeaceMakers Program.

56th Session - February 27 to March 9, 2012

 

February 28: “Women, Media, Revolution: Amplifying Voices on the Frontlines”

 

Building on the 2011 Women PeaceMakers “Women, Media, Revolution” forum, Deputy Director Dee Aker, Program Officer Jennifer Freeman and Editor Kaitlin Barker Davis presented the critical work of journalists, filmmakers and social media citizen activists documenting stories from the frontlines of conflict. Along with panelists, some who were forum participants, they shared the forum’s outcomes and insights, as well as updates on how women and media can encourage alternative, inclusive solutions to organizing efforts for democratic peacebuilding.

55th Session - February 22 to March 4, 2011

 

February 23: "The Precarious Progress of Women, Peace and Security"

 

The IPJ partnered with the International Action Network on Small Arms, International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect, NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security, and UNIFEM to launch the Final Report from the 2010 Women PeaceMakers Conference "Precarious Progress: U.N. Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security." Deputy Director Dee Aker and Program Officer Jennifer Freeman spoke on the panel, along with representatives of those partnering organizations -- all of whom were co-sp0nsors of the conference.

 

UN CSW - Bearing Exquisite Witness

54th Session - March 1-12, 2010

 

March 2: "Bearing Exquisite Witness: Women Using the Arts for Peacebuilding"

 

Deputy Director Dee Aker and Program Officer Jennifer Freeman spoke in a workshop on creative approaches to trauma healing, justice and peace, and women's roles in using the arts to engage communities at all stages of violent conflict. The workshop built on the 2009 Women PeaceMakers Arts Festival "Bearing Exquisite Witness," and featured partnering organization Theater Without Borders, the Coexistence Program at Brandeis University, and playwright Catherine Filloux. Staff member Karla Alvarez also participated in the commission.

53rd Session - March 2-13, 2009

 

March 2: World Premiere of "Rhythms to Peace: The Way of a Woman PeaceMaker"

 

The IPJ, in partnership with Sun & Moon Vision Productions and UNIFEM, premiered the film "Rhythms to Peace," which features Cameroonian Woman PeaceMaker Susan Tenjoh-Okwen. The screening was held in the Dag Hammarskjold Library in U.N. Headquarters. A panel following the world premiere featured Tenjoh-Okwen, Kathy Sangha of Sun & Moon, IPJ Deputy Director Dee Aker, and UNIFEM Program Specialist Antonia Ngabala.

March 2: "Critical Voices: Women, Men and Human Security"

Deputy Director Dee Aker, Program Officer Erika Lopez and Woman PeaceMaker Susan Tenjoh-Okwen launched the Final Report from the 2008 Women PeaceMakers Conference "Crafting Human Security in an Insecure World." The launch also featured Mark Marge of the International Action Network on Small Arms, Sarah Taylor of the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security, and Mirjana Dokmanovic of the Victimology Society of Serbia.

52nd Session - February 25 to March 7, 2008

 

February 25: "Women Ending Cycles of Violent Conflict: Strategies and Best Practices"

 

Women PeaceMakers Palwasha Kakar of Afghanistan and Svetlana Kijevcanin of Serbia joined IPJ staff members Dee Aker, Erika Lopez, Emiko Noma and Laura Taylor on a panel to discuss stories of engaging women and youth in preventing manifestations of violent conflict. The publication "Is Peace Possible?: Women PeaceMakers in Action" was also launched at the parallel event.

 

February 27: Film Screening of "Leading the Way to Peace"

 

In partnership with Sun & Moon Vision Productions and UNIFEM, the IPJ screened the film "Leading the Way to Peace," which tells the stories of the 2004 Women PeaceMakers from Guatemala, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka. Joining Deputy Director Dee Aker for a Q&A session after the screening at the Dag Hammarskjold Library were Rebecca and Kathy Sangha of Sun & Moon, and Stephanie Ziebell of UNIFEM.

51st Session - February 26 to March 9, 2007

 

February 27: "No Excuses: Defending Women's and Children's Rights in Times of Terror"

 

IPJ staff members Dee Aker, Erika Lopez and Laura Taylor explored grassroots and international examples of how women have gotten a seat at the table and advanced their agenda of rights and security. They were joined by Elahe Amani of the Women's Intercultural Network and Anne Hoiberg of UNA-San Diego. The Final Report from the 2006 Women PeaceMakers Conference "Who's Making Policy? What Difference Does It Make?" was also launched at the parallel event.

50th Session - February 27 to March 10, 2006

 

IPJ staff members Dee Aker and Shelley Lyford attended the 50th session of CSW, which explored enhanced participation of women in development, and the equal participation of women in all levels of decision making.

IPJ staff members Dee Aker and Shelley Lyford attended the 49th session of CSW, which reviewed the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and the current challenges and forward-looking strategies for the advancement and empowerment of women and girls.

Deputy Director Dee Aker represented the IPJ at the 45th through 48th sessions. She also attended CSW in previous years, prior to the establishment of the IPJ.
