Biography

David Shirk

TBI Director

David Shirk, Ph.D., became the Director of the Trans-Border Institute in 2003. He is an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department and received his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Shirk conducts research and publishes on topics related to Mexican politics, U.S.-Mexican relations, and law enforcement and security issues along the U.S.-Mexican border. Dr. Shirk is the Principal Investigator for TBI's Justice in Mexico Project (www.justiceinmexico.org), a bi-national research initiative focused on criminal justice and the rule of law in Mexico that is sponsored by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Tinker Foundation.

Recent publications by Dr. Shirk include Mexico's New Politics: The PAN and Democratic Change (Colorado: Lynne Rienner, 2005); a co-edited volume, Reforming the Administration of Justice in Mexico (2007); �Slavery Without Borders: Human Trafficking in the U.S.-Mexican Context,� CSIS Hemisphere Focus, January 23, 2004; and a forthcoming co-authored book, Contemporary Mexican Politics (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, 2008).
