Dean Headley Named as Commencement Speaker at St. Martin's University

Message

William Headley, dean of USD’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, will be the commencement speaker at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, on May 8, 2010. Dean Headley will also receive an honorary degree in humane letters from the university.

As he drafted his speech, Dean Headley tried to connect values of the Benedictine spiritual tradition with issues of peace and justice. Traditionally, Benedictines focus on the notion of “hospitality.”

When asked why he chose to accept the invitation as commencement speaker, Dean Headley said, “It is an opportunity to see if I can communicate the message of peace to a group of young people at the moment of their college graduation as they embark on their adult lives.”
