Journal of Peacebuilding and Development

The Journal of Peacebuilding and Development (JPD) has found a new institutional home at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies (KSPS). The JPD is a peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for sharing critical thinking and constructive action on issues at the intersection of conflict, development and peace.

Until now, the JPD has been housed at the Centre for Global Peace (CGP) at American University in Washington D.C, where its readership has grown steadily since its founding in 2002. Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) provided grant funding for JPD's initial phase. With the IDRC grant coming to an end, the JPD commissioned a strategic review which recommended the idea of a formal partnership with an academic institution that would ensure its survival and ongoing success.

KSPS Professor of Practice, Necla Tschirgi, PhD, an International Advisory Board member of the JPD, was instrumental in initiating discussions to bring the JPD to KSPS which were finalized a few weeks ago. Concurrently, JPD (which had so far been only in print format and was self-published) started an on-line edition and reached an agreement with the Taylor and Francis Group in the UK to become the Journal's publisher. Thus, JPD has entered an exciting phase in its development with a new home, a new publisher and an on-line edition.

Tschirgi states, "As a publication focusing on the nexus between development and peacebuilding, theory and practice, the Journal fills a unique niche in the field of peacebuilding. Its mission, vision and mandate correspond closely to that of KSPS. In joining forces, the two entities will be able to combine resources to reach out to a larger community and enhance the field of peacebuilding."

Professor Tschirgi has joined the JPD's Executive Editorial Team, alongside the Journal's co-founders, Mohammed Abu Nimer, PhD (American University) and Erin McCandless, PhD (New School for Social Research). The JPD is published 3 times per year.

Many world-recognized scholars and peacebuilders tout the importance of this journal. KSPS Visiting Peace Scholar and Former President of Collaborative for Development Action, Inc., Mary B. Anderson, offers the following testimonial:

"I can say, with real fervor, that JPD has both created, and is filling, a niche that few had even recognized. The sloganeering around the linkage of peace, peacebuilding and development existed before the Journal's initiation; it continues today. JPD opens a space in which discussion of these two goals is more carefully and thoughtfully pursued. A refereed journal that invites a wide range of perspectives and approaches is an essential part of the international community's attempt to improve our understanding of how these two actually are related. I particularly appreciate that so many of the articles are applied – that is, directed toward learning about these connections and linkages as a means to improving our ability to intervene in helpful and effective ways."

JPD has its offices in IPJ Room 133. For further inquiries, please contact Managing Editor Martha Garcia at jpdproduction@gmail.com.
