The Language of Immigration: From Rhetoric to Dialogue

The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) hosted a public discussion on the rhetoric associated with immigration policy. Focusing on the language of immigration, terms like "dreamer, "alien” and "illegal" used by opposing camps to refer to a phenomenon that has divided this country since its birth were examined. The language of immigration has changed over the last decade, as important shifts in policy have taken place. To the degree that it has become more uncompromising, it gives rise to the need to consider the implications of these changes for immigrants and society at large. Given the large undocumented population, the time is opportune to have a broad discussion that focuses on the language used in policy-making, the media, and by the general public.
