Master of Science in Conflict Management and Resolution

Our Curriculum

Conflict management and resolution at the Kroc School is designed to be applied to the world that we live in. Our faculty all work in their respective fields, engaging in conflict between gangs, professional organizations, police-community relations and more. Students work directly with faculty, communities and organizations, applying the skills that they build. Our curriculum is based on established conflict resolution and management theory with skill-based courses and workshops.  

The MS-CMR is a 30-credit advanced degree program that can be completed in nine months of full-time coursework over two semesters (fall and spring) and the intersession (winter). The program is interdisciplinary and courses are carefully selected and sequenced to maximize learning. Courses are designed to build upon one another, with content and expectations compounding with each term. The courses for the MS-CMR fall into the following categories:

Theory & Analysis

What causes conflict between people? Between states? Students learn how to understand the roots of conflict through six foundational credits. From natural resources competition to unequal economic development, students learn the pedagogy of conflict resolution.  

Practice & Professional Development

How do you approach a conflict? How do you avoid escalation or violence? Across 12 credits, students learn management approaches and de-escalation tactics, culminated by an Individual Professional Project (3 units), in which students apply their knowledge and skills in a practical, demonstrable way.

Workshops

Over the course of three one-credit workshops, students develop additional crucial skills. students learn how to apply conflict-focused approaches at micro (interpersonal, intergroup), mezzo (inter-organizational) and macro (interstate, intrastate, transnational) levels through three one-unit applied workshops.

Electives

Within the MS-CMR, students can specialize their knowledge on certain topics. Through electives offered in the Kroc School and other disciplines on campus, students can explore specific areas of conflict including ethnic, environmental, trans-border and intercultural conflict.
