Dear USD Families,

Thank you to the thousands of you who joined us for Homecoming and Family Weekend, Celebrate the Spirit of Olé. This joint celebration of alumni, parents, family, students and friends, was a time to reminisce about the years as a Torero student and to recapture the “those were the days” feelings. Parents and families reconnected with their student as they themselves are creating their own precious USD memories. The weekend included educational sessions, an art exhibit by Michelle Zousmer, a Welcome Party and dinner with a live band, the Football Tailgate and Picnic, class reunions, Mass and much more.

All guests who registered for Homecoming and Family Weekend by September 28 were eligible to enter to win a new iPad. The lucky recipient is Charles Farrell P ’16 from Cupertino, CA. Congratulations!!

Congratulations are also extended to two extraordinary people! The recipient of the USD Parents Association Award of Excellence is bestowed upon a USD community member who has made a significant impact in the life of USD students and parents. The Torero Parents of the Year Award, nominated by their student, is given to parents who are instrumental in their student’s USD experience.

  • USD Parents Association Award of Excellence

Message from Vice President of Student Affairs

Carmen Vasques Dear USD Parents and Families,

With the 2012 fall semester in full swing, the campus has been energized by students pursuing their academic goals and engaging in the USD community. Students are expressing excitement about classes, new leadership roles, and being part of a vibrant Torero community. The month of October is filled with many important events, including National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW), USD’s Cold and Flu campaign, and Homecoming & Family Weekend.

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) begins on October 16, 2012. Throughout this week, peer educators will provide important information around high-risk drinking behaviors, challenge the notion that binge drinking is “common practice” or an “expectation” among college students, and offer strategies to empower an informed USD student community by modeling smarter, safer alcohol-related choices. According to a recent campus-wide survey, nearly 55% of USD students reported they did not binge drink the last time they “partied”. NCAAW is an opportunity for all community members to consider their choices around alcohol and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to check in with your student about his or her alcohol use. If you or your student has questions or concerns regarding alcohol or other drugs, please contact the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion (website: www.sandiego.edu/chwp - (619) 260-4618).

The best way to protect individuals and the larger community from the flu is to vaccinate as many members of the community as possible. During the month of October, the Student Health Center will begin to provide the flu vaccine, for a reduced fee, to all students. According to last year’s National College Health Assessment, nearly 20% of USD students experienced a cold, flu or sore throat that impaired their academic performance. Please encourage your student to take steps to stay healthy and advise him or her that flu shots are available in the new USD Student Health Center. Up-to-date information about influenza and prevention education is available by visiting the Student Health Center website www.sandiego.edu/healthcenter/prevention or by calling the Student Health Center at (619) 260-4595.

Thank you for supporting your student as he or she seeks to achieve academic success. I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with so many of you throughout the Torero Days orientation events and I am looking forward to seeing many of you again during our Homecoming & Family Weekend.

In Torero Spirit,

Carmen M. Vazquez
Vice President, Student Affairs

USD Parents Association Board At Work

USD Parents Association BoardOn the third weekend in September, with the October Parents Association Board meeting just weeks away, members of the board’s executive committee along with USD staff, traveled to Lake Oswego, Oregon, hometown of board co-presidents, Jim and Bonnie Trumbull for a 3-day retreat. The purpose? “We want to hit the ground running by our first board meeting of this school year, and felt we needed time to thoroughly delve into all of our initiatives at the executive board level”, said Bonnie Trumbull. “We invited the executive committee, not knowing if they’d have the time, and they responded overwhelmingly! Sure, they’re an extremely committed group, but Jim and I think the hook may have been the invitation to participate in the Willamette Valley Vineyards Oregon Grape Stomp Championship and Celebration that was the real incentive to get them all to town.”

After an all-day meeting on Friday, and a Saturday morning re-cap and goal-setting session, the group headed to the grape stomp, meeting up with Portland-area USD parents, who were invited to join in the fun for a picnic, wine tasting, and the stomp. “While the day’s winners were not from our parent group, we did exceptionally well, since this was a first for most of them,” said co-host, Jim Trumbull. “Perhaps with a little practice, one of our pairings will make it to the National Stomp (no kidding) in Santa Rosa, next year! Regardless, we accomplished a great deal in our meetings, had a great time together, and represented USD proudly.”

Faculty Spotlight: Mitchell Malachowski, Ph.D.
by Mary Levine, Parents Association Board Member
P ’12 and P ’13

Dr. Mitchell Malachowski, Ph.D. made chemistry come alive for those students who were part of his Study Abroad London Chemistry in Sports class this past summer. His curriculum included a visit to Wimbledon, the Olympic Village and other sporting venues around the city. The class focused on the materials used by athletes such as the new composite tennis rackets compared to the vintage wood ones, the use of artificial limbs by athletes and the structure of materials worn by athletes during competition. Read more about Dr. Malachowski here.

Student Health Center Relocates, Expands

The University of San Diego is cognizant of the health and well-being of its students, but the opening of its relocated Student Health Center is an unprecedented testament, physically and visibly, to this philosophy. The center recently moved into a reconfigured, two-story space in Maher Hall, Room 140, next to Aromas. Its size alone, nearly 8,000 square feet, is three times larger than its previous residence in Camino Hall, and that’s very good news for the campus community. Learn more about the new Student Health Center.
