Dear USD Families,

Homecoming and Family Weekend, an inaugural joint celebration of alumni and parents, was a time to reminisce about the years as a Torero student and recapture the “those were the days” feelings. Parents and families reconnected with their student as they themselves created their own precious college moments. It was truly a USD family celebration! The weekend encompassed an art exhibit, educational sessions, Party on the Point, Tailgate and Picnic, awards recognition, class reunions, and Mass. Congratulations, once again to the recipients of the USD Parents Association Award of Excellence and Torero Parents of the Year Award:

USD Parents Association Award of Excellence
Dr. Carlton Floyd, Associate Professor of English and Associate Provost and Co-Director of Center for Inclusion and Diversity

Torero Parent of the Year
Denise Mancuso, P’ 13 from Sonoma, CA

Alumni, parents and families who registered for Homecoming and Family Weekend prior to the assigned deadline were eligible to enter a free raffle for a new iPad. The lucky recipient was Armando Maldonado, Graduate Alum ’11 from the College of Arts and Sciences. Congratulations!!

Homecoming and Family Weekend is now a tradition of the University of San Diego. We are hopeful that you will join us in subsequent celebrations. We would like to thank the parent and alumni volunteers, the students who participated in the award nomination, and of course, our USD colleagues who worked enthusiastically to create a memorable and fantastic weekend.

Message from VP of Student Affairs

Carmen Vasquez Picture Dear Torero Parents,

With the 2011 fall semester in full swing, the campus has been energized by students pursuing their academic goals and engaging in the USD community. Students are expressing excitement about classes, new leadership roles, and being part of a vibrant Torero community. The month of October is filled with many important events, including National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW), USD’s Cold and Flu campaign, and the culminating events of Homecoming & Family Weekend.

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) begins on October 17, 2011. Throughout this week, peer educators will provide important information around high-risk drinking behaviors, challenge the notion that binge drinking is “common practice” or an “expectation” among college students, and offer strategies to empower an informed USD student community by modeling smarter, safer alcohol-related choices. According to a recent campus-wide survey, nearly 55% of USD students reported they did not binge drink the last time they “partied”. NCAAW is an opportunity for all community members to consider their choices around alcohol and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to check in with your student about his or her alcohol use. If you or your student has questions or concerns regarding alcohol or other drugs, please contact the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion at http://www.sandiego.edu/chwp/ or (619) 260-4618.

The best way to protect individuals and the larger community from the flu is to vaccinate as many members of the community as possible. During the month of October, the Student Health Center will begin to provide the flu vaccine, for a reduced fee of $15, to all students. According to last year’s National College Health Assessment, nearly 20% of USD students experienced a cold, flu or sore throat that impaired their academic performance. Please encourage your student to take steps to stay healthy and advise him or her that flu shots are available through the USD Student Health Center. Up-to-date information about influenza and prevention education is available by visiting the Student Health Center website http://www.sandiego.edu/healthcenter/prevention/ or by calling the Student Health Center at (619) 260-4595.

Thank you for supporting your student as he or she seeks to achieve academic success. I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with so many of you throughout the Torero Days orientation events and during our Homecoming & Family Weekend.

In Torero Spirit,
Carmen M. Vazquez
Vice President for Student Affairs

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. David Hay and Dr. Cynthia Caywood by Mary Levine, Parents Association Board Member

Faculty Spotlight PhotoA mutual love for the theater and William Shakespeare brought Dr. David Hay and Dr. Cynthia Caywood together when the Old Globe Theater/University of San Diego's Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Arts program was instituted in 1987. Both Hay and Caywood were on the USD development committee for this highly selective program that nationally recruits seven graduate students to take part in an intensive two-year field of study in classical theater. This creative meeting would not only foster a highly successful graduate program but would also forge a partnership that would lead to the upcoming celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary this year.
