Dear USD Families,

The Office of Parent Relations enjoys offering parents various opportunities to engage you within the USD community. In just the last few months, Parent Torero Days welcomed parents and families of approximately 1100 new first-year students and 400 new transfer students; celebrated Homecoming and Family Weekend with alumni, parents, families and friends; and executed a successful Parents Association Board retreat in Portland, OR.

This month, Parents Association Board members and Parent Ambassadors will be working on the Fall Call Campaign. The Fall Call Campaign serves as a “check-in” opportunity for returning parents and families to connect with newly arrived parents and families. The conversations involve the overall transition to the USD community, and the calls have been described as being invaluable, bringing clarity to challenges and affirming the student’s fit at USD.

We’re always recruiting for the Parent Ambassador Program, an opportunity for everyone, whether near or far, to serve as a volunteer for several on- or off- campus events. Click here to learn more about the Parent Ambassador Program.

Stay informed, don’t miss a beat, and always feel free to connect with the Office of Parent Relations.

Sincerely,

Renda Quinn Karina Viaud Regina Griffing

Message from Vice President of Student Affairs

Carmen Vasques Dear USD Parents and Families,

During the month of November, students often begin to feel additional stress as they become entrenched with their academic demands and the responsibilities of a college lifestyle. As students seek ways to find a sense of balance, this is a great time for you to have a conversation with your student regarding his or her academic experience. Engaging in a conversation about your student’s academics will reinforce your support and can provide a boost of encouragement during this intense academic period.

As you discuss academics with your student, you may find that academic demands are heavily weighing on your son or daughter and negatively impacting other aspects of your student’s daily life. This is not uncommon for this time of year. If your student is feeling significantly overwhelmed, I encourage you to recommend your student consult a Counseling Center staff member (http://www.sandiego.edu/usdcc/ or (619) 260-4655). Free and confidential initial consultations are available at the Counseling Center from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Also, please partner with us to encourage your student to participate in the USD Health Survey. The information obtained from the USD Health Survey assists the University in identifying the health needs of our community and develop interventions to best support our students. Students will receive a participation request via their USD e-mails on November 1, 2012.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and students are beginning to plan for a much needed break with family and friends. While many students are looking forward to the comforts of home, it is helpful to remember your student has experienced a significant sense of autonomy over the past few months. You may find that you and your student now have different expectations regarding his or her time at home. Setting aside time together to clarify these expectations can set a positive tone for a great Thanksgiving experience. If your student is staying at USD for the holiday, staff will be available in all of the residential halls. I encourage you to have your student connect with a Residential Life staff member to ensure your son or daughter spends the holiday with other USD community members.

May the Thanksgiving holiday provide you with special time to reconnect with your son or daughter. Throughout this holiday season, I am grateful for every opportunity to partner with you in supporting your student’s academic goals and future dreams. Happy Thanksgiving!

In Torero Spirit,

Carmen M. Vazquez
Vice President, Student Affairs

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Tara Ceranic Ph.D.
by Mary Levine, Parents Association Board Member
P ’12 and P ’13

Dr. Tara CeranicBusiness ethics can be a very daunting subject. Not, however, in the classroom of Dr. Tara Ceranic. Energetic, fun and relevant are some of the adjectives my son and daughter have used to describe her "Business in Society" class. The assistant professor, who has been a member of the USD faculty for five years, is a favorite among the business major students for her different teaching style and desire to prepare her students for issues and struggles in the "real working world." Learn more about Dr. Ceranic.

Home for the Holidays!
by Mary Levine, Parents Association Board Member
P ’12 and P ’13

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. Most students will be traveling home for the short break. Sleeping in their own bed, visiting with family and just enjoying being home is what most students want. Winter break, however, can be something totally different. Unsettled! That was the term I would use for my son when he came home following his first semester at USD. He kept his own hours with his roommates in Maher and followed his own schedule with classes and football. He had been so busy with final exams, it was almost like he didn't know what to do with all his free time when he came home. He was finally able to relax into a routine after a week, but for the rest of us at home it really did upset the family dynamic. The following year when my twin daughters followed in their brother's footsteps by attending USD, my family was much better prepared for this transition. Continue to read Home for the Holidays
