October 2014 Newsletter

Dear Torero Families,

Happy fall!  Although the weather still feels like summer in San Diego the spirit of fall is in the air.

Some news from the Office of Parent Relations:  We would like to congratulate Dr. Karina Viaud, our former Assistant Director of Parent Relations, who recently took a position as Director of Parent and Family Programs at UCSD.  For those of you who had the opportunity to meet Karina you know she will be missed.  Due to this transition your October Parent E-Newsletter is reaching you late.  Our apologies.  We will be on track again soon.  We are in the process of hiring a new Assistant Director who will be equally helpful and skilled in Parent Relations.  Watch for the announcement in November!

We had our best ever Homecoming and Family Weekend last weekend!  Thank you to those who participated and shared in the Torero Spirit.  From the Big Blue Bash and Concert, to the intriguing and informative Knowledge Transfer on Entrepreneurship, to the spirited Tailgate Party and victorious Football Game, to the Founder’s Chapel Mass and announcement of the Torero Parents of the Year, fun was had by all!  For more Torero family fun, save the date for Grandparents’ Weekend on February 20-21, 2015.  All family members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

As we prepare for the holiday season we wish you and your students well and want you to know we’re here to help guide you to any support your student may need.

Best wishes,
The Office of Parent Relations

A Message from
University Ministry

University Ministry supports students in their religious and spiritual development and encourages them to participate in the campus community in ways that allow them to experience a strong sense of belonging as well as helping them discover who they are called to become.  Students from all religious backgrounds, as well as those still searching for their religious identity, are invited to take part in all of our liturgies, programs, activities and services. University Ministry is a place to belong, believe and become.

Parent Outreach
for New Families

The University of San Diego Parent Board conducts an Outreach program to all our Freshman and Transfer students during their first semester at USD.  Emails will be sent out in the next few weeks to these families from our Parent Board members, Parent Ambassadors and volunteers to make sure all the Freshman/Transfer students are experiencing a smooth transition to life at USD.   If students are experiencing any issues, these volunteers will be able to put parents in contact with the proper USD office that can help.

Please look for these emails in the next few weeks.  We would appreciate a quick email response to let us know how your student is doing.  Our goal is that every student has a great USD experience.

Monthly LLC Spotlight: CHANGE

Living Learning Communities (LLCs), though relatively new at USD, have transformed the First Year Experience for the better. There are 9 LLCs, each with its own central theme and mission. They give first-year students a platform for connecting with professors, administrators, and fellow students. Learn about a different LLC each month as we highlight their theme, their activities, and how they promote personal growth.

By now all incoming students have had one month at USD. This month is one of change and adjustment. Click here to learn about our Change LLC.

A STEP in the
Right Direction

The Alcalá Vista Apartments community recently launched their pilot initiative: Second-year Torero Experiential Program—STEP for short. The STEP initiative is a modern innovation of Residential Life that aims to maximize the success of sophomores both inside and outside of the classroom at USD. Through programs that offer both social and academic opportunities for development, our pilot sophomores equip themselves with the tools to become empowered and impactful stewards of change...click here to continue reading about STEP.

A Parent's Perspective of Study Abroad SYE

My three students wanted to take advantage of the study abroad programs while they were at USD. With one of the most renowned programs in the nation, we were hoping that we could find an experience to accommodate our students' schedules. My son was a member of the football team and one of my daughters was on the cross country and track team. Because of their sports schedules, a normal semester abroad was not possible. The Second Year Experience (SYE) and the Intersession program was just what my children wanted. Offered to USD sophomores, the Second Year Experience (SYE) is a three week program that takes place between the fall and spring semesters...click here to continue reading.
