April 2014 Newsletter

Welcome to our E-Newsletter!

It’s hard to believe that April is here; spring break has come and gone and final exams are right around the corner. Spring is a wonderful time in San Diego and we hope your student will take time to enjoy the outdoors, perhaps with USD Outdoor Adventures.

It’s an exciting time on campus! Seniors are preparing for Commencement May 24-25 while rising sophomore, junior, and senior students are deciding which residence hall to live in next year. USD spring sports are in action, and end-of-the-year events are on the horizon. Encourage your student to continue to manage academics, social events, exercising, and other healthy habits to prepare for the final exams week, May 16-22. Click here to read more.

University Ministry

All members of the class of 2014, along with their families and friends, are encouraged to attend the traditional Baccalaureate Mass at 5 p.m., May 24 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tickets are not required. While the liturgy is a Eucharistic celebration in the Catholic tradition, students and families of all faith traditions are warmly welcomed. The Mass is an opportunity to thank God for the many gifts received during students' time at USD as well as ask God’s blessing on our graduates as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.

LIFE Week, March 31-April 4, celebrates the dignity of the human person by drawing attention to a variety of life challenges. This year’s topics include human trafficking, homelessness, immigration, abortion/adoption, and HIV/AIDS.  For more information, visit www.sandiego.edu/um.

Commencement is May 24-25

For more information on Commencement, including ticket, webcast, and guest accommodation information, parking, schedule of events, and much more, please review the Commencement website. "Like” University of San Diego Commencement on Facebook to view current updates and reminders.

Internships for Students

Today, getting an internship could mean an advantage in the job market after graduation.  For a student to land a quality internship in their desired career field provides many benefits including:  getting their ‘foot in the door’, networking with career professionals, understanding what the job entails, gaining professional skills and building their resume.  USD parents are helping students by offering quality internships from their companies or from companies within their network.  We need your help to uncover these opportunities.  Click here to learn more.

Get Involved! Parent Ambassadors Wanted

The Parent Ambassador Program is a volunteer opportunity for parents/families of USD students. If you were involved in some capacity during your student's high school years, this is a great way to continue your connection to your student's education. Click here to read about the Parent Ambassador Program and click here to sign up. Parent Ambassadors are needed for OLÉ! Weekend and Homecoming & Family Weekend. Contact us to find out how you can get your student to move-in early in the fall by way of volunteering for OLÉ! Weekend.

Torero Tour 2014: Save the Date

San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and Scottsdale…if you live near any of these areas you won’t want to miss the Torero Tour!  It’s a Torero spirit-building, information gathering, networking and fun for all event! Connect with Torero parents and alumni in your area while having a unique opportunity to meet and hear from USD’s undergraduate deans (Arts and Sciences, Business and Engineering) as well as the Director of Athletics.  Join in the excitement as USD goes on tour!

Upcoming Regional Events

There are many upcoming events this month. Parents, families and friends of USD are welcome to join, hear the latest about USD, and meet others living in the area. Meet Ky Snyder, Executive Director for USD's Athletics April 4 in Dallas; Chell Roberts, PhD and Dean for the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering April 8 in Phoenix and April 10 in Seattle; and Noelle Norton, Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences April 16 in San Francisco. Alumni Access to JSTOR

Many USD graduates often find themselves unable to access the wonderful online resources they once had access to as students. But, that is changing! Copley Library is one of the first 50 schools to embark on a new wave of access for their alumni by subscribing to JSTOR Alumni Access. USD alumni can access a seminal database that has been available to USD for over ten years. JSTOR is an interdisciplinary digital archival library that supports scholarship and teaching.  Collections from JSTOR include the Arts & Sciences Collections, the Ecology & Botany Collection, and the Health & General Sciences Collection. Click here to learn how to access JSTOR.
