School of Nursing Career

The University of San Diego has the only nursing school in Southern California dedicated to graduate education, with more than 2,400 alumni—275 of whom hold the PhD or Research Doctorate, and 65 the Doctor of Nursing Practice. With the equivalent of 675 graduate students and 68 faculty, the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science is one of the first Master's Entry Nursing Programs and Doctor of Nursing Practice Programs. The School consistently has placed in the top tier of nursing programs nationally and is ranked in the top 10% of graduate nursing programs by US News and World Report.

The School is one of 14 selected for the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) PhD Nurse Scholars program, as well as the recipients of a second RWJF Master's Entry Nurse Scholars grant. As part of International Clinical Research Missions, faculty and students travel to select countries to conduct sustainable missions that integrate clinical research with culturally competent and evidence-based health care and services to vulnerable populations in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, India, Cambodia, Vietnam and Africa.

Beyster Institute for Nursing Research

The Betty and Bob Beyster Institute for Nursing Research, Advanced Practice and Simulation, the first Institute of its kind in the U.S., signals the School’s commitment to research and translational science. The Beyster Institute will house four Nurse Research Units that focus on the mental and physical health of pregnant women and their infants, veterans’ mental and physical health, healthy aging and cognition and hospice and palliative care.

USD Nurse Scientists also will conduct research on the best methods to prepare skilled Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and the use of Simulation. The Beyster Institute will provide areas for Masters and Doctoral students and Nurse Scientists to work together to conduct research on optimizing health, preventing illness, recovering from illness and coping with hospitalization and treatment. Research support services include PhD-prepared research methodologists, statisticians and writers; budgetary and technical support specialists; a librarian to facilitate literature searches; and a professional editor.
