Parent and Family Orientation

Congratulations on your student's acceptance to the University of San Diego!

This is a very exciting time for you and your family as your student embarks on his or her journey at USD! This is not only a time of transition for your student, but also a transition for parents, family members and supporters.

We highly encourage parents and families to take part in all Parent and Family Orientation has to offer! Come help your student get settled, meet USD administrators, get your questions answered and learn all about being a Torero!

Parent and Family Orientation

Check-In Upon Arrival:

When you check-in you will receive the following items:

  1. A parent and family Welcome Bag filled with fun goodies
  2. A Parent and Family Orientation Booklet with a detailed schedule of events, a campus map, and hours of operation for key offices and departments
  3. An envelope with your weekend wristbands, volleyball game tickets, a group voucher for the football game, and a personalized schedule of the Informational Sessions each person RSVP'd to attend. The wristbands are especially important since they act as your all-access weekend pass. Please make sure to put your wristbands on as soon as you receive them. Blue wristbands are for 21+ yrs old and the green wristbands are for 21 yrs and under.

Your check-in location will vary depending on your new USD Student.

If your student is a first-year resident, please refer to your student's Move-In Memo. You will check in at the Parent and Family Check-In table that corresponds to your student's residence hall during move-in hours and closing at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 31. Should you miss checking in by the residence hall, you may check in at the entrance to the President's Wine'd Down Reception beginning at 6 p.m. at Fowler Park. On Saturday, September 1 you may check in at the Parent and Family Information Center at the Institute for Peace and Justice.

If your student is a first-year commuter, you will check in at the Parent and Family Information Center. The Parent and Family Information Center on Friday, August 31 is open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Degheri Alumni Center. On Saturday, September 1 the Information Center is open from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Institute for Peace and Justice. You may also check in at the President's Wine'd Down Reception on Friday at 6 p.m. at Fowler Park.

If your student is a new transfer student, you will check-in at the Parent and Family Information Center at the Institute for Peace and Justice on Saturday, September 1. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you miss checking in at the Information Center, you may check in at the entrance to the Athletics Tailgate and Dinner event on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Fowler Park.

Parent and Family Information Center:

The Office of Parent and Family Relations, parent ambassadors and alumni volunteers will be available to answer your questions and share helpful tips at the Parent and Family Information Center. You may also purchase additional weekend tickets and drop off your “Note to my Torero” there. Here are the center's hours and locations for the weekend:

Friday, August 31
Degheri Alumni Center, Front Courtyard
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Saturday, September 1
Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, Rotunda
8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sunday, September 3
Degheri Alumni Center, Front Courtyard
10 – 11:30 a.m.

Parking Information:

Families participating in move-in for their students must refer to their student's Move-In Memo for parking practices on Friday, August 31.

For families of commuter students arriving on Friday, August 31 we suggest parking in the Mission Parking Structure.

On Saturday, September 1 we suggest all families with first-year resident students, first-year commuter students, and new transfer students, park in the West Parking Structure since this is closest to the buildings where the Conference of Informational Sessions will take place.

Parking is complimentary the entire weekend.

Conference of Informational Sessions:

The Conference of Informational Sessions will begin on Saturday, September 1 at 8:45 a.m. As part of registering for Parent and Family Orientation you were asked to RSVP to the informational sessions that interest you. In your check-in envelope you will receive a sheet with your personalized schedule of sessions and locations. If you would like to change the sessions you are scheduled to attend, please stop by the Parent and Family Information Center to do so. View pages 6-9 of the weekend booklet for a list of all informational sessions along with their descriptions and locations. Prior to your arrival, you may refer to your original confirmation email to view which sessions you RSVP'd to.

General Reminders:

Please be aware we are expecting warm weather and lots of sun throughout the weekend. Make sure to bring comfortable, light clothing and possibly a hat since many events will be outdoors. The weekend dress code is casual.

Also, please remember, Parent and Family Orientation is a separate program from the students' orientation program. While you will be with your student for parts of the weekend. There are certain events without your student.
