Parent and Family Orientation

Congratulations on your student's acceptance to the University of San Diego!

This is a very exciting time for you and your family as your student embarks on his or her journey at USD! This is not only a time of transition for your student, but also a transition for parents, family members and supporters.

We highly encourage parents and families to take part in all Parent and Family Orientation has to offer! Come help your student get settled, meet USD administrators, get your questions answered and learn all about being a Torero!

Parent and Family Orientation:

Parent and Family Orientation is a 3-day program designed to welcome you into the USD community and to help you learn about various facets of USD. You too are a part of the Torero Family and can act as a valuable supporter for your student as they navigate their college experience and first years of adulthood. We invite you to actively participate in all the weekend has to offer! It is sure to be a fun time with lots of Torero spirit!

Parent and Family Orientation’s Basic Itinerary:

A more detailed schedule is coming soon. Make sure to check back regularly for updates and more information!

Friday, September 1

  • This is move-in day for all first-year students living on campus! Move-in will take place from 8:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. During that time, your student will have a designated arrival time based on their residence hall. This arrival time is the earliest your student is allowed into his/her room unless they are participating in one of the Pre-O Adventure trips.
  • There will be free time to further unpack, get settled, or run errands with your student.
  • Attend the New Student and Family Dinner with your student. This is a wonderful chance to meet fellow incoming families and take a pause on a high-energy day.
  • Join us for the New Student and Family Welcome. This is an official welcome where you will hear from USD’s President James T. Harris III along with other administrators and student leaders that will play an active role in your student’s life.

Saturday, September 2

  • In the morning, while your students are busy elsewhere, we will host a series of conference-style informational sessions to highlight and explain the wide breadth of resources, departments, services, and support USD offers. Make sure to take full advantage of the knowledge and insight shared today!
  • Again you and your student will be given free time in which to meet and run any remaining errands etc.
  • Join your student at a USD Tailgating event and get ready to cheer on USD’s women’s volleyball team at what’s sure to be an exciting game. Go Toreros!

Sunday, September 3

  • President's Coffee and Donut Reception is a casual get together for parents and family members. You will hear from USD's President James T. Harris III as well as meet top administrators and faculty members.
  • The New Student and Family Mass is a special USD tradition where a special blessing is invoked over the entire entering class. This is the official farewell moment between students and their families. All are invited to participate regardless of religious preferences. This event marks the end of Parent and Family Orientation. Students will continue with their orientation activities until Wednesday, September 6 – the first day of fall semester classes.

Please be aware, Parent and Family Orientation is concurrent but separate from the new USD student orientation, OLÉ! Weekend. This means that for parts of the weekend you will be with your student and for other parts you will not be with your student. To view the student schedule click on the following links:
