The Talk

Who's Next...?

The Talk is a new USD tradition that began in 2013. We will be selecting an upper-class student to leave their legacy at USD by giving a speech to the incoming class at the New Student & Family Welcome during OLÉ! Weekend 2015. This speech is an opportunity to capture the undergraduate experience for students at USD and inspire new students to make the most of their time in college. The selected student speaker will have the opportunity to give a five-minute address to new incoming freshman on August 30, 2015 in the JCP.

To be considered, students must submit an application and a one-page introduction (approximately 300 words) of their proposed speech. Applicants are encouraged to include their feelings, reflections, and lessons learned, while also providing inspiration and direction to the first-year students. We are seeking diverse perspectives of the USD experience and what it means to be a Torero.

Applicant Information:

  • Applicant must be a junior (third year) or senior (fourth/fifth year) as of Sept. 1, 2015.

  • Applicant must be in good academic standing, with a recommended GPA of 3.0.

  • Applicant must be in good standing with Student Conduct and Residential Life.

  • Applicant must be available to arrive to campus on August 28, 2015 and participate in OLÉ! Weekend events from August 29-August 30, 2015.

  • Applications must be submitted by April 30th, 2015 to the Center for Student Success in the Hahn University Center, room 114.

All submissions will be reviewed by a committee consisting of faculty, staff and current students, who will select finalists. The finalists will then be asked to present a portion of their Talk to the committee. Once selected, The Talk speaker is required to work with event organizers for final review prior to the New Student Welcome.
