History and Mission
IHI USD History/Introduction
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School, University of San Diego (USD) Chapter (IHI USD) was founded in the Fall of 2008 by Jonathan Mack, Clinical Associate Professor, as an extension of IHI's Open School project. The chapter was originally introduced to USD through the chapter's birth within the University's Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. While the organization is tailored specifically to students within the School, IHI USD aims to recruit members from the entire student body of the USD, as well as affiliated faculty, administrators, and any persons in the San Diego or Southern California area who have an interest in improving health care quality and safety.
IHI USD Mission Statement
IHI aims to improve the lives of patients, the health of communities, and the joy of the health care workforce by focusing on an ambitious set of goals adapted from the Institute of Medicine's six improvement aims for the health care system:
- Safety
- Effectiveness
- Patient-Centeredness
- Timeliness
- Efficiency
- Equity
