Happy Veterans Day; Welcome Letter from Jane Georges, Interim Dean

Dear USD School of Nursing Alumni:

Hello and Happy Veterans Day to all who have served and to all of the caregivers who continue to give compassionate care to our veterans.

This is Dr. Jane Georges, the Interim Dean at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. Some of you may remember me from your days at USD. I have been here since 1996, and I truly love and am committed to our School. It has been an enormous privilege to assume the Dean role after 21 years at USD. Prior to 1996, I did a post-doctoral fellowship and graduated from the PhD program in nursing science at the University of Washington. My baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing are from the University of California San Francisco. I have strong roots in the San Diego community, and I am a proud graduate of Escondido High School (Go Cougars!). San Diego has always been my true home in my heart. I am proud to carry on the tradition of excellence at USD School of Nursing begun by our founding Dean Irene Palmer and continued by Dean Janet Rogers, with whom I was privileged to work for many years.

I’m writing to you to update you on what’s new and interesting here at Alcala Park. On July 5, Dean Sally Hardin stepped down from the Dean position after 14 years of service. Currently, Dr. Hardin is on sabbatical. We are deeply grateful for all of Sally’s contributions to the growth of our School. We especially treasure her commitment to expanding our School with the beautiful Beyster Institute for Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation. This Fall, the Beyster building celebrates its second year of operation, and we are putting it to good use. We have the largest enrollment in the school’s history in our Master’s Entry into Professional Nursing (MEPN) program, and 300 students per week are learning in the Dickinson Simulation Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for advanced nursing practice education.

We have a wonderful group of faculty this academic year. In the finest tradition of our School, they are working hard to provide the best in nursing education. Our programs are second to none, and we now offer nurses the opportunity to pursue a variety of programs that prepare them for roles as Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Executive Nurse Leaders, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and PhD in Nursing Science. Our programs are growing, so stay tuned for future developments!

More than anything, we care about you. Our School of Nursing alums are taking leadership roles in nursing education, administration and clinical practice across California, the nation, and internationally. You are making a real-world difference in the development of nursing. Our alums are taking nursing to the next level, as we prepare to take a lead role in enhancing the health of all Americans.

I would love to hear from you. Please let us know what you’re up to and how you’re doing. We’ve set up a dedicated email address usdnurses@sandiego.edu to hear from you directly. We are also now on Facebook! Find us here. And join us on our LinkedIn page, too!

More than ever, I am committed to the power of nursing. Please join us on the journey as our School takes the next step into being a changemaker in our region and world. We look forward to hearing from you!

With warm regards,

Jane
