Beyster Nursing Gala Goes Green to Celebrate

The luck of the Irish was definitely present at the formal dedication and gala for the new Betty and Bob Beyster Institute for Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation.

Nursing Dedication and Gala 2016

The gala celebration was held March 12 in honor of the $18 million facility that represents the future of nursing at the University of San Diego and opened last fall. A lead gift of $8 million from Betty Beyster and the late Dr. Robert Beyster, founder of the giant research and engineering firm SAIC, laid the foundation for the institute.

Sally Brosz Hardin, dean of the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, talked about the dream that has come true in envisioning, designing, raising the funds and building the impressive facility. She thanked the many friends of nursing who made it possible, including the Beyster family and other donors.

“Depending on one’s culture, spiritual beliefs, and personal perspective, ‘Luck’ comes in many forms … good fortune, blessings, grace, and the Holy Spirit,” she noted in her remarks. “What attracted Mrs. Beyster to those architectural sketches on the wall in Hahn Main? What urged her to walk back and forth to study them? Let us celebrate with joy that this dream came true,” she concluded.

More than 245 guests also enjoyed tours of the institute given by USD nursing graduate students of the 30,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the existing school that includes the new and expanded Dickinson Family Foundation Nursing Simulation Center. The second floor includes the Lizbeth and Walter Smoyer Family Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Education Center. The third story focusing on research includes the Hervey Family, San Diego Foundation Military and Veterans Health Center; the Women and Children’s Health Unit; the Kaye M. Woltman and Melisa R. McGuire Hospice and Palliative Care Education and Research Unit, and the Senior Adult Research Unit and Functional Assessment Apartment. The third floor also includes the Krause Family PhD Research Library and Study.

Along with a reception and dinner, the event also included entertainment. The Excellent Praise Singers, USD Choral Scholars and the Founders Chapel Choir who performed “Oh Happy Day.”

And indeed, it was one.
