Dr. Mary Ellen Dellefield is a Clinical Professor at the University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science and a Research Nurse Scientist at VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS). She received a BSN and PhD from University of California, Los Angeles. From 2008-2012, Dr. Dellefield earned a Veterans Administration (VA) Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Career Development Award. Her work has focused on nursing home quality, with an emphasis on pressure ulcer prevention, guideline implementation, supervision/management, and the role of the registered nurse in the nursing home. She has conducted several nursing home studies in San Diego County and Los Angeles. Dr. Dellefield is active in national VA workgroups that advance pressure ulcer prevention and evidence-based practices throughout the VA. Her recent awards include a “Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholars Postdoctoral Fellowship” from the John A. Hartford Foundation, and a 2009 Sigma Theta Tau Excellence in Research Award. Dr. Dellefield has given numerous scientific presentations at local, national, and international conferences. Her publications focus on quality assurance and performance improvement in nursing homes using evidence-based protocols, promoting excellence in end-of-life care, and other important issues concerning nursing home quality, especially pressure ulcer prevention.
