The San Diego Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps honored the University of San Diego and handed out several awards to battalion members during a ceremonial Pass-In-Review on April 29.

Officer Candidates, Marines, and Midshipmen marched during the traditional military event, which is designed to honor host universities, recognize outstanding battalion members, and salute local military commanders.  Brigadier General Angela Salinas, Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, served as the guest speaker and reviewing officer.  She emphasized to the battalion the awesome responsibility today’s Naval Officers will have and reminded them of the importance of ethical behavior and of the significant role they will play as mentors to the sailors and marines they will lead.

The 275 member battalion marched on the field and passed-in-review with the Marine Corps Recruit Depot band.

“Next to commissioning, this is my favorite event of the year.” said Capt. Mark S. Woolley, Commanding Officer of San Diego NROTC.  “The students get to showcase some of their military professionalism and our outstanding NROTC students are recognized for their hard work.”

Swords were presented to students from the battalion for their outstanding service and leadership throughout the school year.  Some of the awards presented included the Navy League of the United States San Diego Council Award, presented to OC Jarrett Crossgrove and MIDN Robert Trueblood.  The Coronado Council of the Navy League Theodore Roosevelt “Bully” Award was presented to MIDN Laura Pirtle, who exemplified the spirit and tenacious devotion to duty demonstrated by the award’s namesake.   The National Defense Industrial Association Award was presented to MIDN Mark Hubbard and SSgt Joshua Woods for outstanding academic achievement.  Facilitated by the Jack L. Adams Endowment Fund, swords were presented to GySgt Victor Garcia, GySgt Adian Gutierrez, GySgt Chad Hill, GySgt Jeffrey Price, Sgt Sin Carrano, MIDN Caleb Gowan, and MIDN Christina Hayes in commemoration of general officers of the past who helped shape today’s fighting force.

Finally, the Commanding Officer presented end of tour awards to four departing officer instructors, LT Dawn Ricketts, LT Jeremy Grouette, LT Bryan Geisert and Capt Brian Briscoe, and recognized two key members of USD Facilities Department, Mr. Raul Viramontes and Ms. Joy Alleman.
