Sean Barner

Senior Class Officer Instructor

Lieutenant Sean J. Barner was born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He began his undergraduate study at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at Georgia State University.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2003 and completed recruit training at MCRD Paris Island, South Carolina. Following Marine Combat Training, he graduated from the Personnel Administration Course in Jacksonville, North Carolina and reported for duty with 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California.  Lance Corporal Barner later deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq with Company B, 1st Tank Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 2, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as a Company Administrative Clerk and Vehicle Gunner.

After completing Broaden Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) in Newport, Rhode Island, Corporal Barner reported to NROTC Unit Atlanta Region as a member of the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Educational Program (MECEP).

Upon completion of his sophomore collegiate year, Staff Sergeant Barner was accepted for Inter-Service Transfer to Seaman to Admiral-21 and attended the Naval Science Institute in Newport, Rhode Island.

Afloat, Lieutenant Barner completed his division officer tours aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as the Interior Communications Officer, Fire Control Officer, and Electrical Division Officer and then with LCS Crew 201, embarked aboard USS Independence (LCS 2) as the Main Propulsion Assistant and Damage Control Officer.  During his sea tours he made two deployments, first to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Commander Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, and to the Navy’s 4th Fleet area of operations in support of theater security cooperation and Initial Operational Testing and Evaluation (IOT&E) of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mine Countermeasure Mission Package.Ashore, Lieutenant Barner is currently assigned to NROTC Unit San Diego, serving as an Officer Instructor and earning a Master of Advance Studies degree in International Relations from the University of California, San Diego.

Lieutenant Barner awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (2 awards), and various campaign, expeditionary and unit awards.
