CAPT Patrick Rabun
Pat Rabun was born and raised in rural north Louisiana. He graduated from Farmerville High School in 1980, and entered the U.S. Naval Academy that summer. Graduating with honors in Applied Science (Mathematics), his first assignment was to the Pre-Commissioning Unit for USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 50). He served as First Lieutenant, Navigator, CIC Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer during this four-year tour, participating in CONSTELLATION Battle Group's 1987 Arabian Gulf escort operations of reflagged Kuwaiti shipping.
Earning a subspecialty in Operations Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1990, he next served as WEPS/CSO onboard USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62). During the 1993 Arabian Gulf deployment, the ship conducted a successful Tomahawk strike against the Iraqi Intelligence Headquarters.
Following a one-year fellowship as the Surface Warfare liaison to the Center for Naval Analyses, he served as the Ship's Operations Budget Analyst for the SECNAV/OPNAV Comptroller. He then reported as Executive Officer, USS CHOSIN (CG 65), preparing the ship to serve as Air Defense Commander for CONSTELLATION Battle Group's 1999 deployment.
His next shore duty was in Millington Tennessee as the PERS-41 Community Management Analyst, and subsequently as PERS-41 Deputy. He assumed command of USS VALLEY FORGE (CG 50) in July 2002. The ship served as Multi-National Interdiction Force flagship during Operation Iraqi Freedom. A SOUTHCOM Counter-Narcotics deployment with four major drug busts was also completed prior to the ship's decommissioning in August 2004.
Serving as COMNAVSURFOR N1 from 2004 to 2006, he was the first Action Officer of the Surface Warfare Enterprise (SWE) Personnel Readiness Team. After earning a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies at Naval War College, he reported as Commanding Officer, USS CAPE ST GEORGE (CG 71) in March 2008. CAPE was the Sea Combat Commander for PELELIU Expeditionary Strike Group's 2008 C5F deployment, and then began workups to serve as the Air Defense Commander for LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group in 2009.
Captain Rabun became the second Cruiser Class Squadron Commodore in October 2009 - then transitioned CG ClassRon into the N47 CRUDES Readiness Directorate in late 2010. He next completed a 9-month Individual Augmentation tour as the Chief of Staff for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay Cuba. Captain Rabun assumed duties as CO/PNS of NROTC San Diego in April 2012.
