Dr. Ted Martinez Receives the Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education Award

Dr. Ted Martinez Jr., executive director of the National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) and director of the NCCHC Leadership Fellows program at SOLES, has been selected to receive the Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education Award, presented by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) at the AAHHE 11th Annual Conference in Costa Mesa, California. AAHHE is an agent of change for improving education, thus enabling Hispanic students to fully participate in a diverse society.

Dr. Martinez was selected by a panel of experts in higher education. This award is given to an outstanding administrator in the field of higher education who has demonstrated excellence in the profession. The award is named in honor of Dr. Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr., a leader, faculty member, mentor, and champion in higher education.

To celebrate and recognize the work of Hispanics in higher education and other national leaders, the AAHHE awards program was created to honor individuals at a special Awards Luncheon on March 12th at the 11th National AAHHE Conference at the Hilton Costa Mesa Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. Awards are provided in the areas of Leadership in Higher Education, Research/Teaching in Higher Education, Service/Teaching in Higher Education, Outstanding Support of Hispanic Issues in Higher Education and Literary Arts or Publications.

“Dr. Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. was a trailblazing agent of change for Hispanics in higher education. His inspired leadership created the first significant opportunities for doctoral education for prospective Spanish speaking community college administrators. The pipeline we nurture today through the National Hispanic Community College Council’s Leadership Fellows Program is a legacy of his early efforts. It is a distinct honor to receive this special recognition named for such an icon, who was also my mentor.” Dr. Ted Martinez Jr., Executive Director, National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows Program, housed at the University of San Diego (USD).
