Admiral Harry B. Harris, Jr., commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, is the speaker for the 17th annual James Bond Stockdale Leadership and Ethics Symposium at the University of San Diego on Thursday, Nov. 7.

There will a reception in the patio of Camino Hall at 4 p.m., followed by the Admiral’s talk at 5 p.m. in the Shiley Theatre behind Camino Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

“Teamwork Is a Key Guiding Principle” is the theme of his talk. He will emphasize effective partnering between diverse individuals and organizations and how coordinating all elements of national influence is deemed critical to advancing U.S. interest in the Indo-Asian-Pacific region.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet protects and defends the maritime interest of the United States in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region by providing combat-ready naval forces and operating forward in global areas to enhance stability, promote maritime security and defend the homeland.

Admiral Harris has served in every geographic combatant region and participated in a number of major operations including the S.S. Achille Lauro terrorist hijacking incident and the Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom operations.

Following graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978 he was designated a naval flight officer. He has commanded the VP-46, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 1, Joint Task Force-Guantanamo, the U.S. 6th Fleet and Striking and Support Forces NATO. He has attended Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Oxford University.

The purpose of the Stockdale Symposium is to help attendees to understand some of the difficult moral and ethical issues facing military officers today. The late Admiral Stockdale, a Medal of Honor recipient, bore witness to the importance of studying, understanding and applying ethical principles to one’s profession and the conduct of one’s life.

USD’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences and the NROTC San Diego Battalion are sponsors of the symposium.
