Leadership and executive coaches who want to bring out best in their clients can take advantage of a new certificate program offered by the University of San Diego. Along with learning the skills to become a successful coach, the program also offers the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized credential in an emerging field.
The Leadership Coaching Certificate Program blends best practices approaches with important trends that are emerging in the profession. The aim is to provide participants with a broad knowledge of leadership fundamentals that will support their ability to be effective in addressing a range of common and complex dynamics in organizational life.
“Our program is unique in helping executive and life coaches become reflective practitioners who are able to bring quality and depth to their work in a range of professional settings,” said Zachary Green, PhD, program director, who has coached and consulted for numerous organizations including The World Bank, Microsoft Inc., and the National Laboratories at Los Alamos in New Mexico. “Our emphasis is on developing the coach as an instrument of practice where the relationship with the leader being coached is top priority.”
According to the International Coaching Federation, there were some 47,500 professional coaches worldwide in 2012, compared to just 2,100 in 1999. Pointing to a growing profession, the federation said its membership is growing by 2,000 each year. Successful completion of USD’s coaching certificate course also will make students eligible for the Board Certified Coach credential.
USD’s certificate, offered by the university’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences in conjunction with the Division of Continuing Education, can be earned in eight months through a program of seven courses and one workshop. Courses include Foundations in Leadership Coaching, Developing Your Coaching Voice, and Group and Team Applications in Courses.
The first course, Foundations in Leadership, will be offered over three days from July 26 to 28. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree to enroll. Alumni of USD from a variety of degree programs are welcome to apply and will receive discounts for enrolling. Special consideration will be given to leaders from underrepresented populations and smaller charitable and nonprofit organizations that seek the coaching certificate.
