Assistant Professor McDougal Consults for Mercy Corps in Nigeria
Topher McDougal, PhD, assistant professor of economic development and peacebuilding, recently returned from Nigeria where he consulted for the development and humanitarian aid organization Mercy Corps. McDougal is leading the design of a study to assess the economic costs of conflict in the Middle Belt region, where Mercy Corps is working to prevent and resolve conflict between herders and farmers in Benue, Kaduna, Nassarawa and Plateau states. Farmer-pastoralist conflict has intensified in recent years in the Middle Belt, fueling religious antagonism and violent clashes between Christians and Muslims.
The study is part of the project “Conflict Management and Cooperative Use of Resources (CONCUR),” funded by the U.K’s Department of International Development.
