Countering Hate Crimes in the Wake of the Election, TBI Director Ev Meade on Univision

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, "in the ten days following the election, there were almost 900 reports of harassment and intimidation from across the nation. Many harassers invoked Trump’s name during assaults, making it clear that the outbreak of hate stemmed in large part from his electoral success."  Latino and Mexican-American communities, in particular, have been targeted.  TBI Director Ev Meade spoke to Univision about the need to aggressively report, document, and (where appropriate) prosecute hate crimes.  In particular, he singled out the way in which social media has become an echo chamber for hate speech, often directed at children and the most vulnerable members of our society. More than the results, it was the campaign itself that catalyzed the current wave of hateful gestures and speech, giving certain groups a kind of cultural permission to act on their misguided perceptions.
