London Summer Program 2010

Message

London Summer Program 2010: June 17-July 10, 2010

HIST 358/POLS 494: The End of the British Empire in India

This course explores the end of the British Empire in India and the birth of a modern nation state through the use of an interacting role-playing game, part of the “Reacting to the Past” series pioneered by Barnard College. You will “become” leaders of the Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Dalit, or other groups on the Indian subcontinent seeking to wrest control away from the British Empire in “Defining a Nation: India on the Eve of Independence, 1945.” You will also explore how class and caste conflicts, religious divisions, ethnic tensions, and the interplay between power and resources contribute to the complex processes leading to the birth of states and nations.

See London through Gandhi’s eyes. Frequent field trips will allow you to follow Mohandas K. Gandhi’s journey of self-discovery through London. He arrived in 1889 as an 18-year-old law student and remained for 12 years. You will view the site of student protests in Trafalgar Square and see original letters and papers relating to the struggle for Indian independence at the British Library. Walking tours through London’s East End will reveal the impact of South Asian culture on present-day London.
