Camacho Publishes Collaborative Research

Michelle Madsen Camacho, Ph.D., associate professor, Sociology (in collaboration with Susan M. Lord, Ph.D., professor, Engineering, et al.), has published "Who's Persisting in Engineering?  A Comparative Analysis of Female and Male Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American, and White Students," Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, Vol. 15, Issue 2 (2009): 167-190.

The major finding of this research is that women who matriculate in engineering (of all ethnic groups) persist to the eighth semester at approximately the same rates as men.  Thus, the low participation of women in engineering is not a problem of rentention:  it is a problem of recruitment.  [Findings of this collaborative paper were also featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Academia, as well as some newspapers.]
