Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo Welcomes Class of ’21 and Judge Lisa Rodriguez ’95 (JD) Administers the Oath of Professionalism

San Diego (August 27, 2018) – “Today is not just your first day at USD School of Law, it is also your first day in the legal profession,” said University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo, as he welcomed the incoming class of 2021. Judge Lisa Rodriguez, ’95 (JD), administered the Oath of Professionalism.

Dean Ferruolo advised the students to, at a minimum, do three things during their law school years, excel academically, garner hands on practical experience and explore the opportunities available to them; stating this will create any number of options to launch a satisfying career.

He further counseled that law school is not a sprint, but a marathon, and to balance hard work with rigorous play. “Don’t just endure law school,” Dean Ferruolo stated, “strive to have the experience of enjoying law school.”

The new class of 243 students was selected from a pool of over 3,500 applicants. The age of the new students ranges from 21-51 years old, 56% are women and 35.5% are an ethnic minorities. 25 students are enrolled in the part-time program, students matriculated from 107 undergraduate programs and 28 states. The largest contingent of students are graduates of University California, San Diego and USD, 19 students each, followed by San Diego State University and University California, Santa Barbara each with 13. The incoming class also includes four Naval Academy, one Coast Guard Academy, and one Air Force Academy students. The class includes 19 students holding Masters degrees, and six with PhD degrees.
