DENVER (July 31, 2018) – U.S. Magistrate Judge Louisa S Porter, '77 (JD), received the Federal Magistrate Judges Association’s (FMJA) 2018 Founders Award during its annual convention in Denver.

The FMJA is comprised of active, retired, and recalled Magistrate Judges to support the important roles that magistrate judges play in criminal and civil cases in the federal court system. The Founders Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the FMJA and is presented to individuals who have made valuable and lasting contributions to the U.S. Magistrate Judges’ system.

2015 USD School of Law Distinguished Alumni Award Honoree and Board of Visitors member Judge Porter was appointed U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District California in 1991. She served as Presiding Magistrate Judge from 1997 to 2002, and remained on recall status through December 2017 .

Judge Porter served as board member and secretary of the San Diego County Bar Association.  She served as chair of the San Diego County Bench/Bar Committee (Fast Track) and the statewide Diversified Case Management Task Force. In these positions, she helped implement changes in civil case management. She also served on numerous court committees including the Conference of Magistrate Judges and on the Magistrate Judge Advisory Board to the Administrative Office of the Courts. She served on the board of directors—and as president from 2003 to 2004—of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association.
