Los Angeles Daily Journal Features USD School of Law Alumna Judge Judith Hayes '77 (JD)

Judges Hayes

San Diego (February 13, 2018) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law alumna Judge Judith Hayes, '77 (JD), was recently praised in the Los Angeles Daily Journal regarding her thoroughness and dedication to justice. The article is titled "An Open Mind," and specifically reports on Hayes' keeping an open mind with respect to tentative rulings.

Hayes provides practitioners with the opportunity to participate in multiple conferences about her tentative rulings. While her pattern is not always the same, she always tries to provide ample opportunity for the best arguments to be made. In some cases, her mind has been completely changed after speaking with counsel.

She claims that some information or arguments get lost in translation when certain associates at a firm write the papers for the case, while a partner is the one who actually argues. In thanksgiving for her dedication and efforts, San Diego attorney and USD School of Law alumnus Alan Brubaker, '76 (JD), who is a partner at Wingert, Grebing, Brubaker & Juskie LLP said, “I think Judge Hayes really sets herself apart in that regard and really does want to get to the right answer, if it’s taking a matter under submission after orals or learning something new with oral arguments presented, she’s more than willing to do that.”

Not only is Hayes committed to justice when presiding over her civil calendar, but she also handles California Environmental Quality Act cases and spends three days a week hearing ex parte motions as well as regular motions on Fridays.

Her openness to hearing arguments from attorneys, for handling settlement conference fairly and her avoidance of presumptions has resulted in high praise.
