USD Law Students Receive Outstanding Brief Award at Duberstein Moot Court Competition

San Diego (March 7, 2014) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law's Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court team was awarded an outstanding brief award and advanced to the octo-round at this year’s Conrad Duberstein National Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition held at St. John’s University School of Law in Queens, N.Y.

Second-year students Ha Nguyen and Lauren Vega competed alongside more than 60 teams to advance in the tournament and receive an outstanding brief award. The other USD team members were third-year student Terah Drent and second-year student Zach Flati.

The team was coached by attorneys Jeffrey Isaacs and Philip Giacinti of Procopio, attorney Edward Silverman of Sandler Lasry Laube Byer & Valdez, and Mary Jo Wiggins, Vice Dean & Professor of Law. The USD School of Law and Procopio jointly fund the competition in order to defray student travel costs and competition fees.

"This is the tenth-straight year USD has fielded a team for this prestigious, nationwide competition. Students who participate on our teams consistently describe it as the best learning experience they have had in law school," said Vice Dean Wiggins. "We are extremely proud of the legacy that these students have continued for future students and we’re grateful for the attorney coaches, the judges, and Procopio for helping to make this possible."

Special thanks to U.S. Bankruptcy Judges Peter Bowie, Margaret Mann, and Christopher Latham who graciously opened up their courtrooms and presided at oral argument practice sessions before the New York competition.
