Golf Law President Richard Decker

Richard Decker '14 (JD)

San Diego (March 8, 2013) – Growing up in Roseville near Sacramento, USD law student Richard Decker, '14 (JD), has been playing golf since he was eight.

"My dad, my grandpa, and all my uncles golfed, so it wasn't surprising that I became a golfer, too." Richard's best score of 66 came in high school when he won several tournaments. "These days, with less time to practice, my scores are in the mid to high 70's."

As President of the Golf Society, Richard is often busy organizing the Student/Alumni/Faculty Golf Tournament, the most recent of which took place on March 9, 2013. "This is a great networking opportunity for students. Golf is not only a lot of fun, the golf course is a place where contacts are made and deals are struck, so golf is a skill it can pay to have." For students who've never tried the game, Richard is hoping to organize introductory group lessons.

Richard also has serious interests in constrution and business law. While an undergrad at Cal Poly State at San Luis Obispo majoring in Construction Management, he noticed how complex and fascinating legal issues kept coming up all the time, leading him to consider becoming a lawyer. While many attorneys find construction defect cases painfully technical, Richard has the background to make sense of the details, and he's joined the San Diego County Bar section on construction dispute law. A staff writer for USD's new online magazine "California Business Practice," Richard uses his expertise to write about compliance issues raised by new green building codes.

Richard's two favorite classes so far have been Con Law I with Professor Mike Ramsey and Civil Procedure with Professor Martin. "I know, it's kind of strange—neither class has any direct connection to my specialization, but I just really enjoyed those two professors."
