USD Law Librarian Co-Authors Article in AALL Spectrum Magazine

San Diego (December 20, 2012) – University of San Diego School of Law alumnae and electronic resources librarian at the Pardee Legal Resource Center Anna Russell, '10 (JD), co-authored a paper that appears in the December edition of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) AALL Spectrum magazine.

In the article, "Law Libraries Linking Data to Mobile Devices: Save patrons' time and stay hip," Russell and co-author Carli Spina, the emerging technologies and research librarian at Harvard Law School Library, discuss new ways to provide library patrons access to information via mobile devices inside the library.

Many articles have been written on the modern interest in newer, faster, smaller technologies. Mobile devices and technologies do everything that computers can do—but in the palm of your hand. The legal community uses mobile devices and mobile technologies because they provide quick access to work and personal information.

So how do law libraries, home to countless print resources and the access portals to subscription-based digital legal data, incorporate mobile device tools that often have more to do with social networking than reading primary source law? Russell and Spina suggest law libraries do it carefully, due to challenges presented when adding new technology. The authors offer suggestions for law library administrators to successfully overcome the challenges of mobile tagging.

The paper was published in conjunction with AALL's annual conference. Russell and Spina’s presented "Scanning the Future: QR Codes in Law Libraries" at this year's conference held in Boston.
