Professor Mike Ramsey Appointed Director of International & Comparative Law Programs

San Diego (January 30, 2012) - University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo announced today that Professor Michael Ramsey has been appointed Director of International and Comparative Law Programs. He assumed his new role on January 1, 2012.

“I am pleased that Professor Ramsey has agreed to take on leadership of our international and comparative law programs,” said Dean Ferruolo. “He is recognized as a distinguished scholar-teacher of international law, and before coming to USD he practiced international business law at a leading global law firm.”

As director of international and comparative law programs, Professor Ramsey will oversee USD’s LLM in international law for U.S. students and its LLM in comparative law for the graduates of law schools outside the United States. He will also lead the faculty’s efforts to expand opportunities for JD students to study and gain practical legal experience abroad by establishing exchange programs with leading law schools throughout the world.

"I'm excited to take on this role and I look forward to working with our distinguished international law faculty to provide students with legal skills that will help them succeed in an era dominated by globalization,” said Professor Ramsey. “USD School of Law has always been a leader in international law education, and I'm confident that we can build on what we have done already to offer an even stronger program."

USD School of Law has been a leader in international and comparative law for many years. The law school offers a JD with an international law concentration, an LLM in international law for U.S. students and an LLM in comparative law for graduates of law schools outside the United States. The Institute on International and Comparative Law, which was established in 1973, created the first U.S. summer law program in Europe and currently offers summer study abroad programs in Barcelona, Florence, London and Paris. Since 2004, USD has had an exchange program with the University of Copenhagen Faculty of Law, which provides for reciprocal visits of both students and faculty. USD School of Law expects to establish similar exchange programs with other leading law schools in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Along with Ramsey, the law school’s full-time international and comparative law professors include, Professors Abraham Bell, Laurence Claus, Lynne L. Dallas, Ralph H. Folsom, Walter W. Heiser, William H. Lawrence, Herbert I. Lazerow, Orly Lobel, Lesley K. McAllister, Lisa P. Ramsey, Maimon Schwarzschild, Allen C. Snyder and Jorge A. Vargas, as well as a distinguished group of visiting faculty including Board of Visitors Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law Pierre Legrand and Professors Iddo Porat, Shimon Shetreet, Jens Schovsbo, Horacio Spector and Vibe Ulfbeck.

After graduating summa cum laude with a JD from Stanford Law School, where he served as senior articles editor of the Stanford Journal of International Law, Professor Ramsey clerked for the Honorable J. Clifford Wallace of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court. He then practiced international business law at Latham & Watkins in San Diego. Ramsey joined USD School of Law in 1995 as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor in 1997, and appointed professor of law in 2000. He writes and teaches in the areas of international business law, constitutional law and foreign relations law.
