After receiving his JD from Harvard Law School, Forry practiced tax law as a senior partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP and partner with Ernst & Young LLP. He joined USD School of Law in 1997 as an adjunct professor and was named professor-in-residence in 2007. He teaches graduate level courses in international finance and taxation.

"John's experience as both a tax practitioner and teacher makes him the ideal candidate to build on the strengths of the law school's current tax programs, taking this nationally ranked academic program to the next level," said Dean Ferruolo.

As director of tax programs, Forry will oversee the LLM in Taxation program, which has attracted U.S. and international graduate students and attorneys since the program was launched in 1978. He will also lead efforts to expand the reach and reputation of other tax programs at USD School of Law, including continuing education programs and established events such as the annual USD-Procopio International Tax Institute, Richard Crawford Pugh Lecture on Tax Law & Policy and the Tax Law Speaker Series, all of which bring leading tax scholars from throughout the world to San Diego. As he assumes this new post, Forry will draw upon the administrative support of the Graduate Programs office.

“Expertise in tax law remains a powerful tool to obtain and maintain professional positions with law firms, accounting firms, corporations, investment funds, financial institutions and government agencies both in the U.S. and abroad,” says Forry. “USD’s renowned LLM in Taxation program allows our students to master a subject that is always crucial to businesses, individuals and governments.”

In addition to John Forry, the law school’s full-time tax faculty includes Jordan Barry, Karen Burke, Mark Hoose, Herbert Lazerow, Grayson McCouch and Virginia Shue, as well as a distinguished group of visiting and adjunct professors, including the Hon. David Laro, M. Carr Ferguson, Richard Shaw, Dennis Lilly and Herzog Summer Visiting Professor in Taxation Paul Caron.

“John has an impressive record of leadership and service as a former partner at a prominent national law firm and a major accounting firm,” said Warren Distinguished Professor of Law Karen Burke. “He is also a prolific author in the areas of international taxation and finance. His reputation and expertise will allow him to strengthen and broaden USD’s international curriculum and global outreach, and will make him ideally suited to play an enhanced role in USD’s tax program.”
