USD Events to Celebrate February's Black History Month

BHM 2019The University of San DIego will host a variety of Black History Month events throughout February. Meet new people, attend new events and engage with your fellow Toreros.

The University of San Diego will celebrate Black History Month with events taking place throughout the month of February.

The kickoff celebration is on Friday, Feb. 1, from noon to 2 p.m. at Plaza Mayor. Soul food, music and more will be available at this festive event. It is hosted by the Black Student Resource Commons (BSRC).

Come visit the BSRC and other student-oriented organizations and clubs at the Spring Alcala Bazaar, taking place on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Paseo de Colachis area from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Four events will take place throughout the day on Thursday, Feb. 7: The series, Speak on It, will feature a discussion on Black and LGBTQ+ Intersection from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Student Life Pavilion, Room 419. This event is sponsored by the United Front Multicultural Commons (UFMC) and the BSRC; A Grad Life Dialogue, “The Intersections of Race and Generational Status,” will take place in the Graduate and Law Commons space, SLP Room 401; USD Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day by hosting Los Angeles Sparks President and COO Danita Johnson for a special 4:30 p.m. discussion in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The talk will precede the USD women's basketball home game against Pacific at 6 p.m.; and the first of four free movie events under the banner of the Black Cinema Series, will show Prom Night in Mississippi from 6-8 p.m. in Mother Rosalie Hill Hall’s Warren Auditorium. The film series is hosted by USD’s Humanities Center.

An Afri-Dia Fest will commence on Tuesday, February 12 from 12:30-2 p.m. in the SLP Plaza Mayor area. This event is hosted by the BSRC and the African Student Union.

A self-care discussion about the Science in Beauty will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The location is to be determined, but it is sponsored by the Students of Color STEM organization.

Thursday, Feb. 14, is Valentine’s Day but it is also when Grad Life and the Black Graduate Students Association will host a Living Single Trivia Night. A time and location are still to be determined.

Also taking place on Feb. 14 is the second film in the Humanities Center’s Black Cinema Series, Middle of Nowhere. The viewing will be held in Serra Hall 200 starting at 6 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 15 offers a Nothing Bundt Feminism discussion on Black Feminist Thought from noon to 2 p.m. in the Student Life Pavilion, Room 420. This event is co-hosted by the Women’s Commons and the BSRC.

An interesting event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16 as the Lead and Empower Her Women’s Conference runs from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Hahn University Center’s Forum rooms. This day-long event is hosted by the Military and Veterans Programs.

The Torero Program Board is sponsoring an evening event, The Langston Hughes Project from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the UC Forums. The night will feature music, spoken word and more.

The BSRC will host a BAE event — Black Art Exhibit — night on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 4-6 p.m. in the BSRC space, SLP 410.

The third film in the Humanities Center’s Black Cinema Series, Do The Right Thing, will be shown on Feb. 21, from 6-8 p.m. in MRHH’s Warren Auditorium.

There will be a Black Campus Ministry-hosted event called Jesus vs. America: The Effects of White Religion, on Friday, Feb. 22 from 2-3 p.m. in the BSRC’s SLP 410 room.

Copley Library will host a talk by Dr. Monique Morris, author of “Putout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools,” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 in the library’s Mother Rosalie Hill Reading Room.

A discussion on the History of Black Hair will happen from 12:30-2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26. This event is sponsored and hosted by USD’s Black Student Union.

Two events on Thursday, Feb. 28 close out the Black History Month celebration: There will be a BSRC End of Black History Month Luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. in the SLP’s Plaza Menor area. The final film in the Humanities Center’s Black Cinema Series is Moonlight. It will be shown from 6-8 p.m. in MRHH’s Warren Auditorium.
