What's Happening, What's Not During USD's Holiday Break

Immaculata ChurchWhile the USD campus will be closed for most of the rest of December, The Immaculata Catholic Church will have Masses on Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year's Day.

As the last of the final exams for the fall semester take place on Friday, Dec. 21, the University of San Diego campus is about to get a lot quieter. Students are vacating their residence hall rooms to go home for the holidays. Employees of the university, with some exceptions, will enjoy a well-deserved holiday break until the start of 2019.

Here are a few things to take note of what is happening and what’s closed on the USD campus now through the end of 2018:

Mass Services

There will be no masses in USD’s Founders Chapel during the holiday break, but The Immaculata Catholic Church — in addition to its regularly scheduled mass times of 8 a.m. Monday-Saturday, 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday and a 4:30 p.m. Saturday vigil — will have multiple masses:

Christmas Eve Masses (Monday, Dec. 24): 4:30 p.m. Mass-Contemporary Choir (Homily for children and their families); 7 p.m. Mass-Contemporary Choir; 10 p.m. Mass-Traditional Choir (Caroling begins at 9:30 p.m.).

Christmas Day Masses (Tuesday, Dec. 25): 9 a.m. Mass-Traditional Choir; 11 a.m. Mass – Contemporary Choir.

New Year’s Day Mass (Tuesday, January 1, 2019): Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God 9 a.m. Mass.

Athletics

Women’s Basketball: The Toreros (6-4 record) play host to the San Jose State Spartans, Friday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. It is USD’s final nonconference game prior to the start of West Coast Conference play on Dec. 29 at San Francisco and Dec. 31 at Santa Clara. Both WCC games start at 2 p.m. Head Coach Cindy Fisher’s team has a 5-1 record so far in games played in the JCP this season. Learn more about the Dec. 21 game.

Men’s Basketball: The Toreros are enjoying a strong start to the season, taking a 9-3 nonconference record into the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic this weekend at the Orleans Arena. USD faces Washington State, the fourth Pac-12 Conference team they’ve seen, on Saturday, Dec. 22. The 7 p.m. game will be televised on FS1 and heard on radio on 1090 AM. The next day, USD, depending on Saturday’s outcome, will play the winner/loser between Drake and New Mexico State. Sunday’s start time depends on Saturday’s outcome, but it will be shown on FS1 and heard on radio, 1090 AM. USD returns home for its nonconference finale at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29 against Grand Canyon. USD opens WCC play Jan. 3 at Santa Clara.

Auxiliary Services

The majority of the University of San Diego’s auxiliary services, which includes all dining options on campus, the Torero Store, Mail and Print Shop, the Campus Card services office and the US Bank branch, will be closed after Dec. 21. A couple of limited exceptions have Tu Mercado open from 8 a.m. to noon on Dec. 22 and the Torero Store’s textbook rental area in the UC Gallery book vault also open Dec. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon for returns only. Auxiliary Services areas will re-open in January 2019.
