Upcoming Fall 2018 USD Graduate, Undergraduate Theatre Productions

"Stop Kiss" is a play from the Theatre Student Lab, which is student produced and provides opportunities in writing, directing, design, performance and technical theater.

The fall semester is well underway, but the first theatre performances of the 2018-19 academic year are nearing. The University of San Diego has three plays that will each have a short run this fall, including one featuring the seven-member cohort in The Old Globe and Shiley Graduate Theatre Program at USD starting this weekend and two plays involving USD undergraduate theatre students.

Here is a closer look at each of the plays, along with showtimes and ticket information:

The Old Globe and the USD Shiley Graduate Theatre Program Presents: “Julius Caesar,” Oct. 20-28 at The Old Globe Theatre, Balboa Park.

Though Caesar is beloved by the people of Rome, after his latest military triumph, senators Brutus and Cassius sense a dictator in the making. But Brutus is an honorable man, so he faces a wrenching decision: stage a coup for the sake of his country, or stay loyal to his old friend Caesar. The Globe’s intimate arena stage gives you an up-close seat for Shakespeare’s masterful tale of cunning diplomacy, fast-shifting alliances, and the unpredictable consequences of betrayal. The classical actors of tomorrow, now training in The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, expertly perform one of the world’s great plays.

Showtimes vary: Oct. 20, 8 p.m.; Oct. 21, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Oct 23-24, 7 p.m.; Oct. 25-26, 8 p.m.; Oct. 27, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Oct. 28, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $19 general admission, $16 for USD faculty and staff; $8 for USD students with valid ID. Theatre Student Lab Presents: “Stop Kiss” by Diana Son, directed by USD undergraduate DeZell Lathon, Oct. 25-28 at The Vassiliadis Family Black Box Theatre, Camino 131.

A compelling story that chronicles an ongoing investigation of a hate crime while also following the budding relationship between the two lesbian victims. This play is part of the Theatre Student Lab, a series that is student produced and provides opportunities in writing, directing, design, performance and technical theatre. In the spirit of “Poor Theatre,” students are required to conceive of Student Lab with minimal use of props and scenic support. The focus is on the theatrical interpretation of text, development acting, creative use of space and stirring the audience’s creativity and imagination.

Showtimes vary: Oct. 25-26-27, 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 27-28, there’s a 2 p.m. show. Tickets are $5 for all seats. USD Department of Theatre Presents: “Dog Act,” written by Liz Duffy Adams, directed by Callie Prendiville Johnson, Nov. 15-18, USD’s Sacred Heart Hall, Studio Theatre.

Zetta Stone, a traveling performer, and her companion, Dog (a young man undergoing a voluntary species demotion), meet another couple of lost vaudevillians and join forces in their quest for an audience, stalked all the while through the post-apocalyptic wilderness by a pair of ferocious and hungry Lost Boys. It’s a bright dystopian blend of pop and high culture … peppered with eruptions of storytelling, vaudeville acts, and plays within the play.
