SAN DIEGO (September 10, 2018) – San Diego Law Library Foundation has named Associate Dean, Professor of Law and University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Alumna Margaret Dalton, ’94 (JD), as the recipient of the prestigious Bernard W. Witkin, Esq. Award for Excellence in Legal Education.

Professor Dalton assumed the position of Associate Dean in 2016. Prior, she was the faculty director for Clinical and Placement Education, including twelve years as the Director of Legal Clinics. In 2003, she created the Education & Disability Clinic with a discretionary award from The California Endowment and served as the supervising attorney. As a Professor of Law, she teaches in the areas of special education, disability and family law. She currently serves on the Special Education Advisory Committee for the California Office of Administrative Hearings (previously from 2011 to 2013) and is a frequent lecturer in special education law. Dalton has held positions in the Children’s Advocacy Institute and the Patient Advocacy Program. She has been a consultant for the California Judicial Council’s Committee on Access and Fairness, the National Association of Child Advocates, and the California Office of Women’s Health. She holds a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude from Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, and a Juris Doctor from USD School of Law.

“This award is well deserved,” said USD School of Law Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo, who received the Witkin Award in 2014. “Margaret has a long and distinguished record in legal education at USD and is a recognized leader in the San Diego legal community.”  Other USD recipients of the Witkin Award for Excellence in Legal Education include Professor in Residence Robert Muth, Academic Director of the USD Legal Clinics, in 2016, Professor C. Hugh Friedman, who received the award posthumously in 2013, and Sister Sally M. Furay ’72 (JD), who received the award in 2004. 

The Foundation supports the San Diego County Law Library in its mission to provide access to justice for all residents. The annual Bernard E. Witkin Award event is named after the legendary and iconic legal author who pioneered the Summary of California Law, among other publications. The event will be held on October 4th, at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse in San Diego.
